What are Worm Gear Motors?

A Worm Drive Motor is a type of electric motor coupled with a unique worm gearbox or gear reducer that, as the name states, encompasses a worm gear to transmit torque and rotation. A worm gear is a screw-like gear that meshes with a spur gear or a helical gear. The worm gear is usually the driving gear, while the spur or helical gear is the driven gear. Worm gear motors are often used in applications where high torque is required, such as in heavy-duty machinery, conveyors, and elevators.

Things to consider when selecting Worm Gear Motor

Brushed or Brushless Motor: There are advantages and disadvantages of using either option. A brush dc motor is the more common option for industrial applications where only simple functions are needed from the gear motor. You would need a brushless dc motor when more complex motion control is needed.

Mounting Orientation and Space Constraints: By design, a worm gearbox rotates the output shaft of the gearmotor by 90 degrees, or perpendicular to the input shaft of the micro motor its coupled with. This can be a distinct mounting advantage if surrounding space is limited. Other similarly sized gear motors such as a spur gear motor, would take up more than double the space due to its inline arrangement.

Power Supply: these types of motors operate at 12 volts or 24 volts DC (direct current). Most industrial equipment runs on AC power. If you plan to power this type of motor with AC power, you will need to utilize a transformer or AC to DC power supply.
